PHL 101 - Introduction to Philosophy
This course has two aims: (1) to acquaint students with the characteristic academic practices associated with philosophy; for example the close reading of texts, the clear exne's thoughts in speech and writing, and the art of reasoning and argumentation; and (2) to cultivate a certain kind of awareness of or reflection about the things in life that matter, as reflected questions such as " Why is there something rather than nothing? " and " What makes my life valuable? ". It will be important to engender this sort of broad practical reflection on the meaning and value of one's life at the same time that the characteristically theoretical concerns of philosophy are canvassed in the course.
