HST 330 - History of Byzantium |
This course deals with the history of Byzantium from the foundation of Con¬stantinople by Constantine the Great in 330 until the fall of the city in 1453. It may either offer a historical overview along dynastic lines, or a more thematic approach. Possible themes include the relations of Byzantium with emerging powers in the East and the West, the religious controversies such as Iconoclasm and the 1054 schism, emperors and em-presses, Byzantine cultural and architec¬tural accomplishments in Constantinople and other cities, monasti-cism, and the Crusades.[3-0, 3 cr.]
